Memorial Stratford Incident

This is what I said at the SBISD Board Meeting: Any reasonable person would be alarmed to hear that a student was attacked by a group of ten or more individuals—some wearing ski masks—inside the coliseum. Even more disturbing is that similar incidents have occurred at other events. Instead of addressing this with the seriousness it deserved, a Memorial High School booster club communication made light of the situation, stating: "Unfortunately, the MHS Titanic hit an iceberg after the Stratford game, leaving the sailors adrift and unable to cheer for the varsity in their next game at Cy Falls." This response wasn’t just tone-deaf—it was dismissive of a violent attack. An adult, fully aware of the incident, chose to make an insensitive comment rather than take responsibility. As outrage grew within the Stratford community, the Memorial Booster Club issued a response—an empty apology. What should have happened instead? The person responsible for the statement should have apologized. The organization should have publicly committed to fully cooperating with the investigation. And most importantly, the "Sailors" group should have been dismantled. As I stated at the last meeting, what happened is completely unacceptable. Yes, kids make mistakes—but where was the district’s leadership? I am formally requesting that the investigation include: • An assessment of where SBISD police officers were at the time of the incident, • A review of the security preparations made for the event, and • Identification of which athletic administrators were present. This district must prioritize transparency, accountability, and, above all, student safety. We need leadership that addresses these critical issues head-on—not one that looks the other way.
